Types of Minerals in Vietnam

Our country ranks 15th in the world in terms of mineral area, with 60/200 common minerals globally. Currently, Vietnam has more than 5,000 mines, of which some of the largest reserves include: oil and gas, coal, rare earth, limestone, titanium ore, etc.

Petroleum:

Oil and gas is one of the minerals with the largest reserves in Vietnam. Our country has a large sea area of about more than 1 million km2, of which more than half of the area has the potential for oil and gas exploitation. Vietnam is the leader in Southeast Asia and ranks 28th out of 52 countries with proven oil reserves in the world.

The areas with the largest oil and gas reserves are in the Truong Sa sea area, Nam Son sea, Mekong Delta, Red River Delta, etc.
Coal

According to the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group, the country’s coal reserves are about 50 billion tons, of which 3.7 billion tons are exploitable and are distributed in the Northeast coal basin and the Red River coal basin. Coal mines in other provinces have reserves of about 400 million tons.

Apatite

Vietnam currently has 17 apatite mines and ore points, mainly concentrated in Lao Cai, with estimated reserves of about 2,373.97 million tons (calculated at a depth of 900m). Apatite is one of the important raw materials for fertilizer production. In 2022, the mining output in our country will reach 15 million tons, an increase of 12% compared to the previous year.

Titanium Ore

In our country, there are two types of Titan ores: primary ores and placer ores. Accordingly, primary ores are mainly distributed in Thai Nguyen, placer ores are concentrated in coastal provinces from Thanh Hoa to Vung Tau.
